3/13 - day 4 (day 2 of BR)

3/13 - day 4 (day 2 of BR)

On our VBT trips, we usually get route maps that we can download and then install on our bike computers, but GPS devices are prohibited in Cuba. (Yes, we are aware that phones are GPS devices and the Cuban government probably knows that too, but cellphones are a new thing in Cuba and government bureaucracies tend to move slowly.) Perhaps in part because of this and perhaps also to keep up with the times, instead of emailing routes or installing them on Wahoo bike computers (which they used on our BR trip to the Carolinas), BR developed an app. They told us on Saturday to download the app before starting the trip on Sunday because we would not be able to download the app once we were in Cuba. Oops.

So this is what we had for directions.

This was the guy who drove the Lada blasting Michael Jackson and leap-frogging us to give us directions. The other bike people were also positioned at most of the turns.

Beautiful scenery, great weather.

Here's the morning stop. More coconut water.

The ride took us to a beach.

That's Terry behind me (one of the few times he was behind me). He is a Cortland grad and was there the same time as Mike and Mitch.

Here we are about a mile from the beach. It was sandy right at this spot, and in this picture, Walter has sand in his shorts.

Here's where we hung out at the beach. The water was cool and refreshing. I was cramping all morning, so I was in the water just long enough for cramps to start up again. I got out so I wouldn't embarrass myself by drowning in four feet of water.

Back at the hotel, we had live music and a Salsa lesson. Most of us were too intimidated to try anything more complicated than a line dance with four steps.

Here's Pat, a house painter from Iowa busting a move. It was his birthday.
